Tanzania sees gold production soar after increased investment

describe the imageGeneration of gold in Tanzania increased to more than 40 tons last year, trumping production of the yellowish metal from the year prior, Reuters reports, citing the country's central bank.

The East African nation generated 40.4 tons in 2011, a climb from the 35.6 {tons} it manufactured in 2010. Mining services companies devoted more resources to prompting increased production, which was spurred by bullion rising in value.

Tanzania - ranked fourth of nations on the African continent for amount of gold production after South Africa, Ghana and Mali – noted that last year saw a 47 percent increase in earnings on exports, amounting to 2.226 billion. Two drivers of those increases are increased generation of the precious metal and gains in global prices of bullion.

"The price of gold went up by 28 percent to $1,568 per troy ounce and the export volume increased to 40.4 tons from 35.6 tons recorded in 2010," states a report on the website of the nation's central bank.

The yellowish metal is the East African nation's largest earner for foreign exchange. It amounted for more than 59 percent of Tanzania's non-traditional exports in 2011.

"Gold and other precious metals including diamond and tanzanite are the major exports to Switzerland, China and South Africa," the central bank said.

Looking forward, Tanzania intends to augment how much it devotes to the mining sector to 10 percent by 2025, an increase from 3.8 percent last year.

MarketWatch reports African Barrick Gold last year gave the nation a direct contribution of $176 million in taxes borne while spending $400 million with registered contractors and suppliers.
